As an all-time TV lover, I noticed that “Reality Show” is one of the mainstreams in American TV nowadays. The topic covers from model (American next top model), business (The apprentice), talent (American Idol, America’s got talent, Star tomorrow, So you think you can dance), fashion design (Project runway), game (Fear Factor), child raising (Supernanny), and some of other freak topics like Date you mom, my own xxx (I’ve discussed these shows before in the blog.)

Apparently, audiences have choices besides celebrities – they enjoy watching people just like us, people who are nobody. These people either share our problems (supernanny), give us a hope of becoming a star (American Idol), or even more, just fulfill our filthiest desire – watching strangers fight, yell, or hate each other (The apprentice, ANTM, project runway, etc.)

One special thing about the talent shows here is the voting system. To get audiences stick to the show, the TV company encourages people to vote for their favorite stars. The judges only play the devil’s advocate in the very beginning, and later on, these judges become part of the shows. There are usually three of them: one always criticizes contestants, one always loves contestants, and one in between. People love to see these judges become enemies when they have different opinions. The thing is that these judges’ comments are only for reference (and for fighting with each other). We, yes, the audiences, are the real judges. I remember that in AI final 12, the cute host would announce who got the least votes of the week and the contestant would have to sing his/her song again right away. The other comedian talent show announces the weekly loser right before the new competition begins. So you might have prepared for the new show for days, and right before you are going to show your work, the host says bye-bye to you and kicks you home. I actually admire those losers who can leave without tears rolling down.

Americans love reality show so much, so it has to be played in their real life. My internship program has been established for years and is quite big. With so many interns working together, I feel like we are playing our own reality show every day. There’s one guy in our team whom nobody likes. He always asks sharp or dumb questions and talks a lot in a meeting but does nothing. There are girls/ guys who seem to hang out a lot, and so people gossip about it. I have my own problems dealing with my teammates as well (there’s one guy in my team who always disagrees with me, no matter what I say). Every day, it’s like a whole new episode of “the apprentice - LA”. I guess it’s part of fun I got from the internship, well, not really, most of time it’s a pain in the ass, but let’s just say I still got some fun from living in a reality show.
